In years past the men’s 8 has showcased a battle between rowers from Boulder and Denver. This year the local rowers will be joined by a crew assembled from around the country who are coming to Boulder to honor their lost friend George Powers Dirth in the best way they can: by making a boat go fast. George, an experienced back country guide, died in a tragic avalanche last New Year’s Eve. His friends will be rowing in the G-Pow, a boat named in his honor by the Boulder junior club, Colorado Junior Crew, whom George coached along with his mother Lisa Dirth. The crew will be made up of George’s former teammates from Oregon State University and Deeryfield Academy.

Their competition will include a strong boat from Rocky Mountain Rowing in Denver and one from the host club Boulder Community Rowing. The BCR boat features a 2012 Olympian, former college rowers from the University of Washington, the University of California, Dartmouth and Cambridge Boat Club in England. The crew also includes a former world champion triathlete and a local engineer and attorney who all learned to row in Boulder.

The fifth annual Boulder Sprints will be held at the Boulder Reservoir Saturday June 21 from 7 am to 1 pm. The men’s eight will start at 8:36 am.

While the rest of the world is just waking up, the members of Boulder Community Rowing are finishing up a hard workout in their boats at the Boulder Reservoir.

By the time they’re off the water, around 7 most weekday mornings, they’ve already been awake and sweating for several hours, watching the sun and several hot air balloons rise over the flat water at the reservoir.
