Rowing Across the Atlantic Presentation – June 13th

Save the date – June 13th!

Last spring long-time BCR member Suzanne Pinto rowed across the Atlantic Ocean with a crew of 13 other rowers from around the world. Come hear her incredible story and celebrate.

Laudisio Italian Restaurant (29th Street Mall)
Happy Hour begins at 5:30pm
Presentation: 7:00pm

The presentation will be held in the private room at Laudisio at 7pm. Please come early for their delicious happy hour before the presentation. To help the servers, please use one check per table.

Kick-off Row, BBQ & Stillwater Fundraiser

Mark your calendars for Saturday, May 5th – it’s time for the 2012 kick-off row followed by a BBQ!

That weekend is also the first Learn to Row (LTR) session which runs Fri night, and Sat/Sun mornings. We expect a large group and need volunteers for serve as stern pairs and coxes for the LTR boats on Sat and Sun.

On Sat the 5th the kick-off row will run 8:30-10am. The LTR class will have first priority for 8+’s so kick-off rowers will use 4+’s, pairs and sculling shells. This is a fun row to get back on the water before programs begin the following week. We will have a safety launch on the water. The kick-off row is free for members, prospective members and visitors – all rowers must sign waivers available at the res that morning.

After the kick-off row we will have a club-sponsored BBQ at one of the picnic areas near the parking lot.

At the BBQ we will also kick off our 2012 development campaign for a new Stillwater launch. The Stillwater is a big step up for BCR in terms of rower safety, modern features and wakeless performance! This investment promises to provide many years of service and sharply increases the ability to protect rowers in the event of emergencies on the water. Start making a list now of potential sponsors who may be willing to help with a one-time pledge or longer-term support. Learn more during the BBQ on the 5th!

We need volunteers in a couple of areas:

-Friday May 4th – transport ergs from Flatirons Cross-fit (Walnut Ave, Boulder) to the res before 6pm

-LTR stern pairs and coxes for Sat (7:30-10am) and Sun (6-10am)

Thanks to all of those who came for the work party on April 7th! We got a lot done and it’s great to see everyone pitch in to help get our fleet ready for the season. What else is left to do you ask? Why rigging the smaller boats (i.e., singles and doubles) of course!

4/7/12 BCR Work Party

Has the recent warm weather created an uncontrollable itch to get oars back on the water? Well, then, have we got the opportunity for you!

It’s time to start getting our equipment ready for the season, come one – come all! Work Party hours count towards your annual 16-hour service commitment to BCR!

Saturday, April 7 8:00-12:00 pm.

Before we can officially launch our 2012 season, we need to get our equipment rigged and out of winter storage. Dress to work – and bring any 7/16ths wrenches or gloves you may have.

Sweep Clinic with Canadian National Team Coach

Members of the Canadian Mens’ National Team will be training in Boulder soon for the 2012 season including the London Olympics. On Saturday and Sunday, April 14^th and 15^th, Olympic Gold Medalist and Senior National Coach (Men), Terry Paul, will conduct two sweep clinics for BCR members on Boulder Reservoir. The Saturday, April 14^th clinic will focus on members coming out of the Novice program. Sunday, April 15^th will target members with at least one year in Experienced or Racing. Each clinic will run 7-9am, cost is $25/rower (coxswains free). BCR coach Ala Crockett will support the clinics by taking videos.

The plan is to have one 8+ each day to provide the most coaching attention possible, however, if there is sufficient interest within the club a second 8+ may be added. Due to his primary commitments Coach Paul is not available for private clinics.

As a cox for the 1992 Men’s eight, Terry Paul helped the crew bring home Gold for Canada from the Barcelona Games. Since then, he has gained much experience as a coach in Canada with the men’s program and with the Swiss National Team. Terry coached the 2002 World Cup Gold Medalist lightweight men’s four, and women’s double, and has been in charge of the Under-23 and non-Olympic programs. In 2006, he coached the Under-23 men’s eight to a Gold Medal and the senior coxed four to a Silver Medal at the World Championships. In 2008, Terry coached the men’s pair to Olympic Silver in Beijing.
