About BCR
BCR: Boulder Community Rowing, Inc. (BCR) was founded in 2000 to bring a variety of rowing experiences to the Boulder area community. It is a non-profit corporation with an active Board of Directors. As of August 2008 we have approximately 130 participants.

Funding comes from member fees, donations, and other fundraising activities. Fees are outlined under Membership. See Fundraising & Donations for more information on those topics.

Partnerships: BCR partners with other Front Range crew programs, such as Colorado Crew (the rowing team of the University of Colorado at Boulder), Rocky Mountain Rowing Club (located at Cherry Creek Reservoir in Denver), Fort Collins Rowing Association, CSUCrew at Colorado State University (also in Ft. Collins), and Colorado Junior Crew (a Boulder rowing program for high school students).

When We Row

In general, rowing is a pre-dawn or early morning event. The water is quiet, the sunrise is beautiful, and the ducks are sleeping. In Boulder, we rarely row in the afternoons because of the variety of water hazards: high winds, hail, lightning and other weather dangers, as well as motorized boat traffic on Boulder Reservoir. Early morning training offers the opportunity to arrive at work on time. Most classes run from 5:30 a.m. until 7:00 a.m. Monday through Saturday, broken up into different program days; private lessons usually occur after the program hours when coaches are free for individual lessons.

Where We Row

We row at Boulder Reservoir, northeast of Boulder. Click to see a map and get driving directions. The boats are stored on racks outdoors at the Boulder Reservoir. We hope to have a boathouse one day so we can offer a more extensive program and can better protect our equipment from exposure to the elements.

What is Sweep Rowing?

"Sweep" is rowing with one oar per person, where you can row the following types of boats:

  • a pair, which is two people with two oars total
  • a four, which is four rowers with four oars total
  • an eight, which is eight rowers with eight oars total

Most fours and all eights require a coxswain, the person in the back of the boat who steers and calls commands.

What is Sculling?

"Sculling" is rowing with two oars for each person, where you can row the following:

  • a single (1x), which is one person with two oars
  • a double (2x) (or double scull), which is two people with four oars
  • a quad (4x) (or quadruple scull), which is four people with eight oars

Sculling boats generally do not have a coxswain - instead, the rower in the bows seat of the boat is responsible for steering.

What does it take to be a rower?

Who can row: BCR was formed to bring rowing to the greater Boulder community. Anyone who is moderately fit and who can carry at least 50 pounds can row. If you're younger than 18, check out Colorado Junior Crew, which also meets at the Boulder Reservoir.

Never rowed?: Most people haven't rowed. Until recently, rowing was a sport traditionally associated with East Coast schools. Now, masters (people aged 27 and over) and women are among the fastest growing communities in rowing. Our Learn-to-Row classes will teach you the basics of the stroke, all the terminology, boat handling and etiquette, warm-ups, stretching, and water safety.

Size: No, not all rowers are tall and skinny! Rowing includes both heavyweight and lightweight categories. And if you're small, you can become a "coxswain" - the person who steers the boat and orders everyone around. We're always looking for coxswains.

Age: Rowing offers age categories from high school to the ancient. Many events are held with certain age and weight categories. Even in mixed-age boats, handicaps are given in an attempt to even things out. There are rowers still competing at the national level into their 90s. Most young people start rowing when they are in high school.

Gender: Both men and women are eligible rowers. One of the fastest growing populations of rowers is women - high school, college, and masters-category women. Because rowing is a sport that involves mostly legs, women often do as well or better than men. Men and women often row together in the same boats for classes and general training, but can also row in all men's or all women's boats for practice or race preparation.

Fitness: Rowing well requires at least a moderate level of fitness. You must help carry the boat to and from the dock, as well as help lift the boat in and out of the water. The dock is about 100 yards from the boat racks, and each person carries about 50 pounds on his or her shoulder. Sweep and scull boats are narrow, and the rowing motion involves bending forward and backward at the hip. Consider these factors and your body type when choosing a program.

Injury: Many people who have sports injuries can still row, including those with knee, elbow, shoulder, neck, etc. injuries. Some injuries actually improve because rowing is a non-impact sport (unlike running). But check with your doctor to make sure. Even those who've never participated in a sport before can row. Since BCR offers many types of rowing opportunities, physical strength is not the primary factor. We'll teach you how to row.

What do Rowers Wear?

Attire concerns: The singlet (or unisuit) is not considered the most flattering piece of attire. Rest assured, however, that the unisuit is usually worn only for racing. Each club chooses its design to intimidate (or amuse) other crews, and just generally look like hot rowers. At practice we're much scruffier. The only necessary items are non-baggy pants, such as bike shorts or tights. Loose shorts and sweats can get caught in the seat wheels. Layers will help you to stay warm and dry.

How can I learn?

We offer MANY formal programs that are geared to rowers of all abilities and interests. These programs range from a single "Learn To Row" weekend to eight-week "Racing" programs that culminate in national-level championships! In addition we offer individual sculling lessons and workshops. For more information, check out our Sweep Program or our Sculling Program.

Joining a club and learning to row can be intimidating prospects, but they don't have to be. At BCR we are happy to answer any questions you might have about our programs or the best way for you to proceed. Feel free to Contact Us with any questions.

I Don't Want to Race!

Competing or not: Many new and returning rowers have a vision of athletics as it was in high school and college. BCR provides opportunities for those who want to relive competitive days and for those who would rather leave them in the past. Some rowers train 5-6 days per week or more, while many row 1-3 days a week and never compete.

What About Winter?

Indoor Racing: In the winter, rowers practice on rowing machines, and the really crazy ones race each other. Each February there are several regional indoor racing championships, culminating in the indoor racing championships in Boston, called the C.R.A.S.H.-Bs. Our regional race is the Mile High Sprints, sponsored by the Rocky Mountain Rowing Club. Visit this site in the fall for updated information, or check the Concept II web site at www.concept2.com.

Want to Join, But Don't Want to Row?

If you enjoy the idea of being on the reservoir at sunrise, but aren't interested in rowing, consider joining the club as a coxswain. The Coxswain is the only member of the boat who faces in the direction of travel, and is in charge of steering the boat and coordinating the rowers. It can be a challenging job, but it's rewarding - full-time coxswains receive their club membership for free.

There she was coached by the women's coaches at Harvard and Northeastern on sculling and small boats. That summer she was introduced to coaching through an internship at the Crafsbury Sculling Center in Vermont, where she focused on coaching masters in singles. She went on to compete on a national level in the single, and went abroad to New Zealand to row sweep and sculling for the University of Otago. After New Zealand, Christiana began coaching learn-to-row at Greater Columbus Rowing Assocation. That fall she coached the varsity women at Denison, and the following summer was promoted to Program Director and Head Coach of GCRA's learn-to-row program. This past fall, she was invited to be the women's novice coach for Upper Arlington High School and led them to a very successful season. This winter she moved to Boulder to pursue a career as a professional triathlete, and was thrilled to learn that she could continue coaching rowing despite the shortage of water in Colorado! She is the head coach and program director for Colorado Junior Crew, and will be coaching the experienced sweep group at BCR, learn-to-scull and private sculling lessons.

All program participants are required to attend the target regatta.

Rowers may choose to self organize and participate in additional regattas, if it doesn’t interfere with the racing program.

All BCR members are welcome to attend races throughout the year. Members rowing in EP or Novice who wish to race may arrange and pay for separate racing coaching outside of the scope of their programs. Any member can pull together a team to participate in any race with club equipment in accordance with club bylaws. However, Race members receive first priority of equipment for target races.

Sculling Programs for 2010

If smaller boats are more your style, consider sculling. These boats seat either one or two people and each person has two oars. Lessons for all skill levels are offered for BCR members on an on-going basis. The club has singles and doubles available for recreational and competitive sculling. In past years, club members have raced in the Masters Nationals, the Head of the Des Moines, and the Head of the Charles, among others.

Equipment

The scheduling of equipment is on a first-come, first-served basis. You can reserve boats up to 6 days in advance. Please verify that a boat is available for any privately scheduled lesson. Private boats may be also used for sculling lessons.

To use the club's sculling equipment on your own, you must be certified by a BCR coach. Please refer to the Rules section below for information on how to become certified to use BCR sculls.

Currently our fleet consists of:

  • Exciting news! We're expecting six brand new Peinerts for this season!
  • 1 Hudson double
  • 1 BBG racing double

Rules

Club Singles (including Peinerts) and Hudson Double (Purple) bow seat:

Must be certified by a coach, which includes the following:

  • Rower has demonstrated understanding of basic boat-handling skills.
  • Rower is able to carry the boat and oars down to the water on own either overhead, on shoulder, or with dolly.
  • Rower is able to demonstrate awareness of personal safety and safety of other boats/people on the water.
  • Rower has demonstrated basic boat-handling skills on the water, including rowing, backing, turning in place, launching, docking, stopping quickly, and looking over the shoulder to steer.
  • Rower has performed a "flip test" with a BCR coach present. Must demonstrate ability to either get back into boat or swim to shore using the boat as a flotation device.
  • Rower has attested to acknowledgement and understanding of the risk involved in participation in a water sport and unsupervised use of BCR equipment. Rower has been instructed to carry a PFD for safety.
  • Rower has demonstrated an understanding of safe and unsafe water, weather, and wind conditions. Knows traffic pattern and best ways to handle large wakes from speedboats. Understands merit of staying close to shore and uses good judgment about when to get off the water.

Alden Double:

Can be used by any certified club member.

BBG Double (Kathi S.):

Must have steered (i.e., gone out in a single or sat bow in Alden or other double) 50 miles before being bow seat in this boat (or have constant coach supervision).

  • 50 miles = 40 wide laps around the Reservoir

Vespoli 1x:

Must have steered 30 certified laps in another single AND have additional coach permission before taking out this single (or have constant coach supervision).

Vespoli M2 4x:

Unsupervised Rows (i.e., no coach present): Must be rowed WITH a coxswain. The bow rower must be certified to row bow in the Kathi S (per rules above).

Supervised Rows (i.e., with a coach present): May be rowed WITHOUT a coxswain. The bow must be certified to row bow in the Kathi S (per rules above) and/or designated by the coach.

If you feel that you can be "grandfathered" in for rowing any boat, please contact the Board of Directors at info@boulderrowing.com with your justification and it will be considered.

Coached Sculling Programs

For the independent scull rower wanting to improve their on-water performance, these programs provide opportunity for periodic coaching. While the offerings are minimal, the content will be plentiful. Both programs will include a short introduction/review of safety on the reservoir.

Learn To Scull

Four (4) Learn-to-Scull (LTS) programs are offered this year. The object of these programs is to introduce individuals to sculling. The programs include 6 sessions spread over the course of two weeks. This program is designed to acquaint the interested with the sport of sculling. Different from sweep, in a scull the rower operates with two oars instead of one. Boats range in size from 1x, for one person, 2x, for two people and 4x, for four people. In this program participants will become familiar with the equipment used for sculling and begin to build a skill base, which will allow them to operate a boat independently. Upon completion of the program, if any individual wishes to continue to use BCR equipment they must pass the scull certification test that can be administered by the coach during the program. Enrollment is capped at 6 participants.

SCHEDULE

Fundraising & Donations

2009 marks another milestone for BCR. It is the 10th season of developing and supporting rowing in the Boulder Area. BCR receives no dedicated funding from external sources and is entirely member and donor-supported. Equipment, coaching fees and all other expenses are dependant on member fees, volunteers, manpower, donations and sponsorships (more info on sponsorships coming soon).

In order to assist BCR in garnering funds for equipment and costs, you may participate in this process in several ways: through our on-going fundraising activities, through donations to either specific or general capital campaigns, or through sponsorships. BCR is a non-profit 501 (c) (3) corporation, so donations are often tax deductible.

Please check out BCR's current sponsors

Current Fundraising Activities:

Virtual Garage Sale

Transform clutter into BCR equipment! If you have items worth $20 or greater (no junk please), contact Cindy Giltner. She will collect small items that fit in her car, store them at her house, and post them for sale online. Anything larger is definitely welcome, but will stay at your home until sold. All proceeds go directly to BCR. Donations are tax deductible and a receipt can be given. Help us buy boats and oars and clean out your house at the same time!

An easy (and free) way to donate to BCR while doing your holiday shopping – or anytime! Click Here!

I-Give is an online shopping website that donates a percentage of the purchase price back to a non-profit of your choice. It is easy because the shops are brand name businesses where you already shop, like Expedia, Amazon, Macy's and PetsMart. These businesses, and hundreds more, have agreed to give a certain percentage back (from 2-26 %) to the charity of YOUR choice!

Cafe Press

Buy BCR-branded items through Cafe Press and BCR gets a small percentage in return.

Donate to Boathouse or Equipment Fund through "Network for Good"

You can donate to the BCR Boathouse or Equipment Funds through Network For Good, a non-profit website. There is a 4.75% tax-deductible fee for credit card/PayPal transactions, which you can add or deduct from your donation. This fee is used to pay banks, credit card companies and other administrative costs. Network for Good does not profit from fees.

Corporate Sponsorship Opportunities

Boulder Community Rowing is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 2000 to bring the experience of rowing to the community of Boulder and beyond. Since then, BCR has become a home for novice rowers learning the sport for the first time, returning athletes reconnecting with a great way to stay in shape, and both a men's and women's team competing at the national level with great results.
